This natural wonder features a 90-foot waterfall named for Noccalula, a young Cherokee maiden who plunged to her untimely death rather than forsake her true love. She is memorialized by a statue and the engraved story of her fate. Nestled among the trees in the park is a pioneer village, a group of rustic, hand-hewn log buildings representing a display of pioneer living conditions, included in the village are a country store, grist mill, covered bridge, pioneer home, smoke house, blacksmith shop and more. Other park attractions include a War Memorial and Museum, botanical gardens, hiking trails, sightseeing train, playground, carpet golf, picnic pavilions and meeting facilities.

 

**IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT ROAD CLOSURES**
There is road construction on I-59 in Gadsden. Noccalula Falls Exit 188 on I-59 Northbound is CLOSED. If you are traveling North on I-59, you must take exit 183 and turn right onto Hwy. 431/278 and continue to 12 St/Noccalula Road where you will turn left. The Noccalula Falls Park & Campground entrance is on the left after you top the Mountain at 1500 Noccalula Road. The entrance to I-59 Northbound is closed as well, you will have to reverse these directions to get back to I-59. Take 12 St/Noccalula Road back to Hwy. 431/278 then continue on to I-59.

 

 

Coosa River Bank Project

The project on River Road behind Hampton Inn includes bank stabilization, fishing piers, sidewalks, a picnic area, fencing and a parking lot.

The project was funded with a grant from Alabama Power Company. It provided about $220,000 in funding for the project as part of its relicensing process on the Coosa River.

If fishing is your game, you'll enjoy venturing along the banks of the Coosa River. The 1,000-foot boardwalk is a good place to toss in a hook and talk to a few of the local fishermen. With benches, gazebos, & picnic areas lining the walk, this area also provides a perfect place to sit and watch the day slip into dusk.

The Gadsden Sports Complex has been the leader in sports programming and scheduling in Alabama for many years. The complex includes a five field softball/baseball complex, a twelve court tennis center, a combination football/soccer field, a one-mile lighted walking track, a sports coliseum and two high school baseball fields. The complex has hosted numerous local and state level competitions in softball, baseball, tennis, soccer, football and basketball. The softball complex and staff is also recognized and been awarded nationally for the hospitality and organization of national softball tournaments. The Jack Gaston Coliseum, located at the Sports Complex, along with its many sporting and civic events is the home to the Therapeutic Recreation Department. The City of Gadsden also has 3 outlying youth baseball fields.

Briarmeade is located in North East Alabama and is open for "Public Play". On Ralph Avenue in Glencoe, Alabama, lies a golf course straight from the heart of Scotland. Not a long layout, but with small greens, Briarmeade has narrow fairways which requires you to have complete control of your swing to score well. Briarmeade has some great players, and has had some of the best in the southeast to play. With these outstanding ball strikers the course record still stands at 62. We have produced club professionals, Tour players and the president and director of the Professional Golf Association, Mr. Ken Lindsay. 
George Black founded Briarmeade in the early spring of 1935. Mr. Black owned the property and designed the original nine holes. The course occupies approximately one hundred twenty-five acres.

Inscription:

In memory of the Gadsden Alabama girl heroine Emma Sansom, who when the bridge across Black Creek had been burned by the enemy, mounted behind Gen. Forest and showed him a ford where his command crossed. He pursued and captured that enemy and saved the city of Rome, GA. A grateful people took the girl into their love and admiration, nor will this marble outlast the love and pride that her deed inspired.

Horse Pens 40 is a historic outdoor nature park offering hiking, camping, picnicking,bouldering, exploring, and much more. It is open for day use 7 days a week from 9am til after sunset, and also offers primitive campsites and 100+ RV hookups.
The day use fee is $5.00 per person per day. Camping is $10.00 per person per night (includes day use). Children under 10 are FREE!  (with paid parent). Elect. and water hookups are $5.00 extra. CHECKOUT TIME IS SUNDOWN.
   We have clean Restrooms and shower facilities, a large (50' x 120') covered pavilion, as well as a Country Store and Restaurant.
